How to choose a camping sleeping pad by R-value

A sleeping pad does more than add comfort: it insulates you from the ground, where most body heat is lost. The R-value is the starting point, but thickness, weight, packed size, and durability change the decision.
Use R-value as the first filter
R-value measures resistance to heat loss through the pad. Higher values suit colder ground and winter trips; lower values are enough for warm-season car camping. Manufacturers publish R-values on the product page—check the number and what conditions it is marketed for.
The R-value is one input, not a guarantee: personal comfort, the sleeping bag, clothing, and shelter all change the real-world result.
Match thickness, weight, and packed size to the trip
For car camping, a thicker, heavier pad is fine and often more comfortable. For backpacking, weight and packed volume matter more than plushness—compare the packed size against your pack before buying.
Inflatable pads pack small but can puncture; foam pads are tougher but bulky. Choose by your trip type and be honest about how you will carry it.
Plan for failure and repair
An inflatable pad can fail at a seam or valve. Carry a repair kit and know how to use it before the trip, and consider a closed-cell foam pad as a backup or as extra insulation under an inflatable.
