Sleeping bag temperature ratings: what the number can and cannot tell you

A sleeping-bag rating does not describe a universal experience. It works alongside your sleeping pad, clothing, shelter, weather, and personal comfort range.

Treat the rating as one input

Manufacturers may use different rating systems or show different numbers prominently. Look for the stated test standard, whether the number is a comfort or limit value, and who the product is intended to fit.

Do not plan around the lowest survivable number. For a conservative trip plan, leave a margin for changing weather and your own tendency to sleep warm or cold.

ISO 23537 (formerly EN 13537) separates comfort, lower-limit, and extreme ratings: plan around comfort, never extreme. As a field rule, a women’s comfort rating is often close to a men’s lower-limit rating for the same bag, but individual metabolism varies. For example, compare a 20°F comfort bag such as the REI Co-op Magma 15 (verify the current label and model page) with a 30°F comfort bag such as the NEMO Disco 30 ; use the manufacturer page and ISO test label to confirm the exact values before buying. The sleeping pad is part of the system

Ratings under EN 13537 / ISO 23537 are set for an average adult: the comfort value assumes a woman sleeping normally and the limit value a man in a curled position; keep to the definitions above when comparing bags.

Read the temperature standard, not the marketing name

Look for ISO 23537 testing and separate comfort, limit, and extreme values. For a forecast low of 25°F, a cautious sleeper may choose a comfort rating near 15–20°F, then add a pad with an R-value around 4 or higher.
