High-altitude camping: plan around altitude and weather

High-altitude camping adds altitude to the normal planning variables: thinner air, faster weather changes, colder nights, and a slower pace. This guide plans conservatively for trips above roughly 2,500 meters and does not replace medical advice or professional training.
Plan acclimatization into the itinerary
If you travel from low elevation, build in time to acclimatize before sleeping high: climb high during the day, sleep lower, and avoid gaining too much sleeping elevation in one day.
Know the symptoms that should end the plan—headache that worsens, nausea, unusual fatigue, or dizziness—and have a descent plan agreed before departure. This is general planning information, not medical advice; consult a professional for your specific situation.
Expect colder nights and faster weather
Temperature drops with altitude, and mountain weather can change in hours. Choose a sleep system with a cold margin, carry extra layers, and check the official forecast and any alerts close to departure.
Confirm trail and camping conditions, closures, and permit requirements with the park or forest service, and check avalanche information where relevant.
Keep the scope conservative
High altitude amplifies the cost of small mistakes. Keep the trip scope within your group's fitness and experience, carry more water and food than the plan says, and set a turn-back rule for weather, symptoms, or fatigue.
A reservation or a planned itinerary is not a reason to proceed into conditions beyond your equipment and skills.
