Summer camping is a heat-management problem as much as a gear problem. The plan covers water volume, shade and timing, cooking choices, and the conditions that should change your itinerary.

Plan water for heat, not for average days

In hot weather, hydration needs rise well above the cool-season estimate. Carry more water than the plan says, know the nearest reliable refill point, and include electrolyte strategy if the trip involves sustained activity.

Check that your water source or spigot is actually available in summer—some campgrounds shut off water or reduce it during dry periods.

Use shade and timing as tools

Do the hard tasks—setup, hiking, cooking—in the cooler parts of the day. Position the tent and cooking area to use available shade, and confirm the site's exposure before you arrive.
